Just the mention of Fiji’s tropical islands conjures visions of cocktails, warm water and sandy beaches. Though it’s easy to put your feet up and get lost in ‘Fiji time’, we know there are plenty of can’t-sit-still, active travellers who crave something more! There are no shortage of adventurous things to do on and around Savasi Island, so we’ve put together our top five picks for lovers of adventure.
1. Explore Fiji’s hinterland by kayak
Join your personal guide on a kayak journey through the stunning Qaloqalo River, past majestic displays of lush green mangroves and tropical scenery. Be guided to the remote, glass-like Salt Lake, where you can paddle, swim or simply take in her spectacular 100 acre spread. Experience the pure peacefulness and tranquility of this untouched region where the only sounds you’ll detect are a breeze and distant bird song. The best part is natural ocean tides feed these waters, so you’ll barely have to break a sweat paddling downstream! We’ll pick you (and your kayak!) up on the other side of the lake.
2. Dive the Soft Coral Capital of the World
Fiji offers some of the best scuba diving in the world, and it’s all within a day trip of Savasi Island Resort. The world reknowned Rainbow Reef is located in the Somosomo Strait between Taveuni and Vanua Levu, and Koro Sun Dive will take you there. With more than 40 dive sites on offer, including the ‘Great White Wall’, this is nature at its best! You’ll find one of the most extensive and awe-inspiring coral reef systems in the world, with thousands of fish and invertebrate species to behold.
3. Go River Tubing at Vunesi
This fun tour is suitable for the whole family and includes calm water drifting, small rapids and beautifully lush tropical scenery. Your guided adventure begins with a scenic 40 minute drive to Vunivesi on the south coast of Vanua Levu, where you’ll also get to visit a traditional Fijian village.
4. Snorkel by Moonlight
Once the sun sets, a new type of adventure begins! Prepare to experience a whole different world beneath the ocean surface by snorkelling after dark. With your underwater torch you’ll see the reef come alive, with corals opening up like flowers and lobsters scampering around the reef. You’ll be accompanied by a guide who may just catch one for our chef to prepare for you the following day. A rewarding experience for those not afraid of the dark!
5. Encounter dolphins in the wild
Spectacular and secluded Natewa Bay is a feast for the eyes, and it’s no wonder that this beautiful spot is also home to resident pods of spinner dolphins. While sightings are not guaranteed, you can take a spectacular half-day excursion with Ocean Ventures Fiji to enjoy the region, snorkel some of the best hard and soft coral reefs in Fiji and witness healthy populations of reef fish, sharks, rays, turtles and (if luck is on your side) dolphins!
