Background

What is the history of Savasi Island Resort?

+

Savasi’s owner and founder first visited the island in 2005, searching for a pristine natural escape away from the rush of daily life. Captivated by its verdant landscapes and unspoiled coastal beauty, he quickly realised Savusavu was the perfect sanctuary for travelers looking to relax, rejuvenate, and reconnect with nature.

What began as a private family retreat soon evolved into a broader vision. Driven by a desire to share this tropical haven with others, development began, with a clear focus on barefoot luxury, peace, and tranquility.

Building thoughtfully—just one villa at a time—the island was crafted using natural materials to harmonise seamlessly with its surroundings.

Savasi welcomed its first guests shortly after and has since hosted thousands of travelers from every corner of the globe. Today, the resort remains a family affair, remaining owned and operated with the same dedication and passion that inspired its very first villa.

Beaches & Swimming

Do you have a beach?

+

We have a number of small secluded beaches around the island. Rather than long white peninsulas, you can expect private sandy coves tucked between the stunning volcanic terrain.

Is the beach swimmable?

+

At high tide, swimming is possible around the island, but we do recommend wearing wear reef shoes to protect your feet.

Low tide leaves the reef and rocks exposed, along with many large rockpools you can take a plunge into. The surrounding exposed reef may look ‘dead’ but it is full of life and a habitat for all sorts of marine life including fish, crabs, starfish, sea cucumbers, moray eels, octopuses and more—making this a perfect time to go for a reef walk instead!

Remember to wear reef shoes to protect your feet from coral and any stinging marine life and take care not to crush living coral underfoot.

Can I swim/snorkel at Savasi Island Resort?

+

Yes, at high tide, you can swim and snorkel right from the island. The waters around Savasi are abundant with marine life, including soft and hard corals, reef fish, starfish, sea cucumbers, eels, turtles and occassionally even dolphin pods are spotted.

At low tide, it’s a perfect time to take an exploratory reef walk instead. Alternatively, head to the marina for deep-water swimming and watersports regardless of the tide.

Tips for swimming and snorkelling

Wear reef shoes to protect your feet

Life jackets are recommended, currents and waves can be strong

Always let someone know before heading into the water

Is there any dangerous marine life?

+

You may occasionally see small reef sharks in our surrounding waters, but these are generally considered harmless to humans. They are naturally shy, skittish, and prefer to flee rather than confront you.

Whilst not common, sea snakes, cone snails and stingrays have also been spotted in the waters around Savasi, as they are in most tropical waters. Again, these creatures are not known to be aggressive unless provoked or handled.

We recommend wearing reef shoes to protect your feet from coral and any stinging marine life, admiring marine life from a distance, and always letting someone know before heading into the water.

Flights & Getting Here

My flight to Nadi arrives late in the afternoon. Can I still get to Savasi Island that day?

+

The last daily flight from Nadi to Savusavu typically departs in the mid-afternoon, and domestic check-in is required at least one hour prior to departure.

If your arrival flight cannot connect to Savusavu or Labasa on the same day, you may need to stay overnight in Nadi and take an early flight the following morning (typically starting around 7:00 AM).

We recommend checking current flight schedules directly with the airline, as timetables are subject to change.

Can I take a boat or ferry to Savusavu instead of flying?

+

While ferry services operate between Suva and Savusavu, we advise against this mode of transportation. The journey takes about 12 hours (overnight), and communication and booking with local operators ahead of time can be challenging. For a more convenient and seamless experience, we recommend flying.

Do I need visa to travel to Fiji?

+

Region & Climate

Is Savusavu worth visiting?

+

Of course, we’re a little biased, butwe think Savusavu is truly something special!

If you’re looking to step off the beaten path and discover a more authentic side of Fiji, it’s absolutely worth the journey.

Free from the usual crowds, Savusavu is blessed with serene natural beauty with genuine local culture and unhurried island life—offering a perfect balance of adventure, relaxation, and cultural immersion.

What is the best time to travel?

+

May to October is Fiji’s dry season and generally considered the ideal time for most visitors.

However, some travellers prefer the warmer months of November to April, which bring tropical—but typically brief—showers, meaning the landscape can be enjoyed at its most green and abundant.

Note that weather reports online are notoriously unreliable for our region (often forecasting non-stop rain!), and Savusavu still enjoys plenty of perfectly sunny days during the wet season, too.

You may also consider determining your travel dates by seasonally-available activities available and experiences.

Should I avoid visiting Fiji in the wet season?

+

No. Fiji’s tropical climate meaning showers can happen year-round—whether it’s wet season or not.

Online weather forecasts are also notoriously unreliable for our region, often showing non-stop rainfall! In reality, Savusavu and Savasi Island enjoys plenty of gorgeous, sunny days year-round.

Rainfall also means the island and surrounding landscape are lush, vibrant, and at their most breathtaking.

Lastly, some of our most unique experiences, such as whale spotting and snorkelling with manta rays, are only available during the wet season.

What is the weather like?

+

Fiji has a year-round tropical climate, but there are two general seasons.

  • November to April – The warmer months of the year with temperatures reaching about 32 degrees/89 Fahrenheit during the day. Humidity is greater. You can expect bright sunny mornings and showers in the afternoon. The landscape is green and vibrant, with the surrounding hinterland and waterfalls in their full glory
  • May to October – These milder months with temperatures reaching around 26 degrees/78 Fahrenheit during the day. Rain is less common. Temperatures can dip to about 17 degrees/64 Fahrenheit in the evenings, so we suggest bringing a light sweater or jacket.

The driest month of year is July, and the wettest month is January.

Keep in mind that weather reports online are notoriously unreliable for our region, and Savusavu still enjoys plenty of perfectly sunny days during the wet season, too.

What is the history of Serenity (previously Tui Tui)?

+

Previously known as Tui Tai, Serenity is a 140 ft vessel and iconic part of Fijian history, considered one of the finest ships built by local boatbuilders in the 1980’s.

It was also the second largest vessel ever built in Fiji at the time.

With a capacity for over three hundred day passengers, it primarily served Beachcomber and Treasure Island resorts from Lautoka and the Coral Coast.

Additionally, Tui Tai boasted three tall aluminum masts and 6000 square feet of sail, estimated to be taller than the top of Dominion House in Suva.

In 2016, Tropical Cyclone Winston swept through Fiji, leaving a trail of destruction – including to the much-loved Tui Tai vessel. Despite its damaged state, we saw an opportunity to breathe new life into the vessel, bringing it to Savasi Island Resort, and restoring it over a period of 18 months.

Serenity is permanently moored ashore Savasi’s marina, providing a unique accommodation option for up to 10 guests, including more adventurous travellers or boat enthusiasts.

Does Serenity sail?

+

No, Serenity is permanently ashore (on land) beside the turquoise blue waters of Savasi Island’s marina.

Is there any movement on board?

+

No, the vessel is moored on land and does not move.

Can we use the main restaurant/bar?

+

Yes. Serenity guests have full access to the rest of the island and the resort.

Can resort guests use the sun beds, hot tub, bar area on board Serenity?

+

Unless Serenity is booked on a private charter basis, guests staying in the villa accommodations are welcome to access the shared spaces and facilities aboard Serenity, such as sun beds and the jacuzzi/hot tub.

Please inform our staff if you intend to utilise these amenities and are not staying aboard Serenity.
